Sachse Proposal (Cf. Web Page)

Sachse created these models that allowed for the existence of 6 carbons that would not be strained as Baeyer predicted. If the arrangement was not in a planar formation such a set-up is possible.

He made his models by drawing on paper and then folding along the diagonals, and tetrahedrons symbolized carbons. This leads to the ball and stick diagram next to Sachse folded models.

The two configurations that are show in the two slides are actually just bond rotations of the same molecule. They are representations of the chair and boat molecules that appear later.

Sachse received much criticism for his ideas, despite his numerous attempts to prove he was correct. Mohr eventually came up with evidence to support the boat and chair idea.
