This was a letter written by Wohler to Liebig mocking the proponents of the type theory. In it, he has a very detailed description of the methods he used to transform manganese acetate to a compound in which every element was replaced by chlorine, which had the same properties as the original material (the same type). The dateline is Paris because most of the proponents of the type theory lived in France (including Dumas, one of the most influentual of its supporters).

  • Poor Woehler first sent the spoof to Berzelius. They thought it was so rich that he also sent of copy to Liebig, who promptly published it in his journal, much to Woehler's embarrassment (and Dumas's annoyance). - JMM
